Promoting Biomedical Research Cooperation

Recommendation

One of the Florida Legislature's stated intents of FL CURED to: coordinate efforts among the state's private and public universities and research institutes and the biomedical industry in Florida... The advisory council fully supports this role of FL CURED and recommits to making sure that FL CURED cooperates, coordinates, and supports other organizations that share goals of FL CURED. Resources are too limited not to take every advantage of complementary missions so as to maximize the leverage of the state's investments.

The Advisory Council specifically recommends FL CURED and other biomedical, research, and economic development organizations (e.g. BioFL, Enterprise Florida, the Florida Biomedical Research Grants Program, the Florida Research Consortium) join forces to host a major "Florida Biomedical Research Summit" annually. Such a cooperative venture would produce a larger and more dynamic showcase for Florida's biomedical research than would be possible if each organization does its own, separate conference.

UPDATE: FL CURED has joined forces with BioFL to co-host the BioFL annual conference on October 24-26. 2010 at the aHarbor Beach Marriott in Ft. Lauderdale. Stay tuned to this websit for more information.

FL CURED is unique in Florida because of the breadth of its mission within the biomedical research community. It is notable that FL CURED shares goals with many other entities locally, regionally, state-wide, nationally, and, indeed, internationally. Examples of organizations with complementary efforts include:

  • BioFlorida
  • The Florida Research Consortium (FRC)
  • Enterprise Development Corp. of South Florida
  • FasterCures

FL CURED fully embraces its goal of cooperating, coordinating, and supporting other organizations that share goals of FL CURED.

In previous reports, FL CURED has made recommendations that reflect such a philosophy. For example, in 2007 FL CURED partnered with the Florida Alliance for Health Professions Diversity to bring the Honorable Dr. Louis Sullivan, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and chairman for the landmark report, the Louis Sullivan Commission's Missing Persons: Minorities in the Health Professions, as a keynote speaker at the 2008 Minority Health Disparities Summit. In 2009, concerns remain over shortages of highly skilled workers throughout the biomedical research and healthcare industry and one solution that continues to lag is to increase the number of such workers from underrepresented minorities. Echoing past recommendations, FL CURED reaffirms its support of the efforts of the Florida Alliance for Health Professions Diversity, urging greater participation by other state institutions, and recommending broader state support for this organization.

In a similar vein, FL CURED has in the past supported Florida’s investments in biomedical research (Scripps, Burnham, the King and Bankhead-Coley Biomedical Research Programs, etc.) and championed the efforts of BioFlorida, the Florida Research Consortium, Enterprise Florida and many others to advance the life sciences sector of Florida’s economy. FL CURED continues to strongly support state investments in biomedical programs that contribute to economic growth and, especially in these very difficult economic times, commend Florida’s increased investment in the King and Bankhead-Coley Biomedical Research Programs. The FL CURED Advisory Council also recommends the legislature do everything in its power to restore the cuts and, in fact, grow investments in Florida's universities or much of the recent progress will be thwarted.
